My love of interiors and design began with helping friends and family style rooms for special events. Coupled with my favorite time of the year (Summer) getting prepared for some rockin’ parties is one of my specialties. Easy, Cheap Outdoor “Tiki” Lights

On my show SPLURGE & SAVE this week I build inexpensive “Tiki Torches” for any backyard space or outdoor event. It’s so easy!

Green Lanterns Line the Space

I use round Chinese hanging lanterns and put them on a copper pipe stake. A great resource with lots of variety is The Paper Lantern Store.

You can buy copper pipe stakes at any local hardware store, the total cost of the ones I used was $40.

LED lights are great for projects like this, they are battery operated, perfect for outdoor settings and cost a measly $4.50 each. I hang an LED light in each lantern. It’s safer and longer lasting than an open flame.

Colorful Chinese Lanterns

Alternatives to LED lights:

- If you have a an outdoor electrical outlet close by – are light cord kits that you can buy at a local hardware store.
- If you have a problem with mosquitoes outside, consider installing fluorescent lights instead, as incandescent lights can attract the bugs.
- Another cheap source of lighting is bunching together old Christmas lights.

Chinese lanterns can get damaged from rain or snow. These are easy to pop on and off and collapse for seasonal storage.

Torches or lanterns can be staked to line the perimeter of any space, walkway, waterscape, pool or garden.

Splurge & Save: Chic Outdoor Space

On my show last week we met Stephan and Pascal Jean. They had a huge backyard that was for the dogs, literally. They empty space had tons of potential. They wanted an entertaining family oasis but had no idea how to spend their budget of $8500. That’s where I came in. . .They are from the Caribbean and this design style is a vibrant blend that mixes colors & fabrics. Tell me what you think of the finished product!
