I had to speak at a design extravaganza for the now defunct but still fabulous Domino Magazine. For part of presentation I showcased a tiny bedroom redesign done on a budget of $500. It was fun! Sanibar wanted a room inspired by India, she had gone on a trip there recently and loved it.

The Naked Room has been transformed into a Room Recipe fit for a Paparazzi Paramour! My design team, Megan Lesniak, Daniela Acosta and Stacey McKellar really showed amazingly talent. Come see me speak tomorrow Sunday Sept 5 and Sept 6 at 2pm and 4pm.

The Naked Room

My very talented crew got to the Miami Beach Convention center today to begin building my Room Recipe “Paparazzi Paramour” for the Miami Design & Renovation Show. I love starting to dress a naked room, it’s so exciting to literally watch a vision from in my tiny mind come to life. The Show hours are below if you wanna stop by. And Pier 1 Imports is giving away a shopping trip worth $3000 to $5000. Wahoo!

Come See Paparazzi Paramour at the Miami Home Show!

Each of my Room Recipes is named by an archetypal character, not necessarily the person who may inhabit the space but rather a person who is intriguing or inspiring. The room that I am building at the Miami Home & Renovation Show Sept 3-6, 2010 at the Miami Beach Convention Center is called Paparazzi Paramour. How do I describe this Room Recipe, you might ask? Read it and weep:

“In your dreams, do you see yourself on a yacht heading for Borneo, or hustling the sales clerk for a celebrity discount on a diamond Rolex? Shhh… we won’t tell anyone that you secretly wish to be stalked by the paparazzi. To say this room is about drama is an understatement.”

Home Show Bound!

I am not only speaking at the Miami Home Show on Labor Day Weekend, but I am also designing a showcase room in partnership with Pier 1 Imports. Below is my Inspiration Board for the space. I would love your thoughts!

The Room Recipe for this space is called Paparazzi Paramour. It’s a fun take on the jet set life of those celebs followed by the paparazzi (complete with champagne glasses and leopard clutch!) The person who wants this room secretly dreams about having that life with all its drama, hipster panache and rock n’ roll edge. The walls will be black and all the furnishings and finishes are creamy and lush, as you can see from the Inspiration Board for the space.

I designed this “Paparazzi Wallpaper” that my friend J Wallace will custom make. He rocks!

Pier 1 Imports Hayworth Upholstered Headboard

I loved the Hayworth upholstered headboard (not for sale until Fall), that was my inspiration for the entire design. I wanted to use a piece that is – under normal circumstances – seen as femme and design a room that would also appeal to a man of style (a metro-sexual in this case!) I also loved the juxtaposition of the intimacy that a bedroom defines clashing with the very public life of paparazzi prey.

The Hollywood Regency style is fully hot and on the rise. It’s a style that takes chances. It believes in bling. Dares to use gold in a borderline gaudy way. The pros that best understand this style are set designers, because it’s always theatrical. I love my book Regency Redux – I pick it up when I’m feelin blue and need a glam slam picker upper. Dorothy Draper nails it as well, of course!

Bright kelly green & pink, Lucite and lacquer, black & white geometrics, and mirrors, mirrors, mirrors are all indicative of the Hollywood Regency style. I am literally transported to 1930s through 1950s scandals and secrets of Los Angeles. It is mysterious and full of passion not to mention opulent and fantastical.

There’s No Place Like…My Bedroom

In Real Simple Magazine there’s a great article called What Does Home Mean to You? I always get teary eyed when people write such personal things about their home like “where I don’t have to be perfect” or “where I can take off my bra” or “total acceptance”. Go ahead, well up, it’s ok.

It made me think of my favorite room in the house, the bedroom. Why you may ask? Because it is where the most intimate experiences happen: healing, loving, nursing, relaxing, playing.

A Room Recipe for a great bedroom includes the following ingredients:

Are Hollywood Houses Real?

I read the coolest article about “set houses” – the homes they build on big studio lots and try to make it look real. The New York Times reports In Dexter’s Show House, Even the Chairs Are Bound where many set dressers from the Showtime’s programming got together to display their stuff.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. The calming Zen-like feel of Japanese style interiors is accomplished through the use of subdued colors, and natural fibers like silk are a must.

2. Bamboo, stone, and other natural materials provide the basis for a soothing color palette of brown, green, lavender, and other soft colors.

3. Silk screen printing has its origin in simple stenciling commonly used in Japan.

4. I created an accent wall to highlight the bed and add some glamor to the room by hanging replicated silver leaf wallpaper. This makes a huge impact adding luster and drama.
