Thank you Joanne Cossrow for an amazing question!

I added some expensive glass tile to a bathroom in an inexpensive way. I only used a small amount and chose a contrasting color to make it really stand out. Just enough to add that sparkle and to make the ceramic tile seem more expensive than it is. Of course this family was expecting their first child any day so I wanted to keep the costs down.I also wanted to give her a quiet, simple space with just a little pizazz.

Joanne was a producer on Save My Bath, so she already knows the answer to this one! Thanks Joanne!

When my husband and I bought our almost 100 year old charming stone cottage in Westchester, NY we knew we had quite a bit of work ahead of us. Like most of us, we had a very limited budget and have had to pick and choose our projects in order of budget and importance. One of the biggest challenges I have faced was how to turn a tiny, and only full bath in my house, into one that would work for our whole family. The original owners had rented the house for years and it had really taken its toll. They also put a full size vanity into a space that was so small the vanity was larger than the bathroom could accommodate.

The solution came from Home Depot in the form of the vanity of my dreams that was so small in depth it really opened up the bathroom amazingly, not only that it came completely assembled with the sink. All I had to do was buy the fixtures. The matching mirror is not a vanity mirror, what we lost in storage space we made up for in visual space. With the mirror flush against the wall it really opened the space up. We added a matching cabinet for over the toilet to make up for the space we lost in the vanity mirror. It also added a very charming New England look to match the vanity. We added a teak shelving unit from IKEA as well as the sweet white pitcher I use for flowers to brighten up my bath and add some color. I added lined baskets for the shelving to give us more space and use the rest of the shelves for towels which rolled up give our bathroom a nice spa feeling. I went from drab to fab in just a few steps and all for about five hundred dollars.

We’re all a ball of nerves these days. With this money crisis and overall uneasy state of affairs, a lingering sense of stress is a common perspective. Ah the days of wine and leisure are past! I find people asking for a calmer environment. A regular request these days from my clients is a zen peaceful feeling in their home. That’s why the article in the New York Times written by TIM McKEOUGH called “Creating an Oasis of Calm” really hit home. Architect Robert D. Henry talks about creating a space that enlivens the five senses.

So I remembered a bathroom I did for a hectic family in New Jersey. They are a growing family with a little one and another on the way. He is a doctor just starting his practice, and she has an in-home business. So I brought a peaceful oasis to their bathroom. Orange is the color of creativity and she has a bout of writer’s block. I used lots of bamboo and other natural materials, hand blown glass lighting, and a small water feature. I even put kanji symbols on the door that represent

Upload your very own “Oasis of Calm” and win a KWD tote!

Living in Manhattan has its advantages – it’s an amazingly culturally diverse place where you can spend the day at MOMA and the evening catching a Broadway show, then go to dinner at midnight with a crowd of other night owls – all that on a Tuesday!

On the downside, we sometimes have to make do with smaller spaces, and the accompanying storage problems that come along with them. Especially in our bathrooms. Sure, you can go to the Container Store and get some storage boxes, but will you end up with a balanced design that is beautiful AND functional?

Look at the situation from a few steps back and do some advance planning. By building a simple, contemporary wall unit, you can perfectly accommodate those inexpensive boxes and get all the storage you need, while still allowing you the opportunity to display some of your existing household accessories in a unique way.

This client had a TON of things she wanted to keep in her bathroom, and she was also wrestling with how to display her tea-pot collection, which was nearly all but hidden in her overcrowded kitchen.

The result – a functional, beautiful space that gave her more than enough room for everything from towels to toilet paper, along with some great spaces to display pictures and other decorative items. The secret was in creating a wall unit that made the boxes look like an integral part of the look, rather than a hastily put together afterthought. Throw in a velvet trimmed, coordinated shower curtain, and you’ve got an beautiful, balanced, upscale look – and all without straining your budget.

She tells me that she feels sexier when she steps out of the shower now, but I’m not sure I can share the rest of what she said without betraying her confidence….

Facets are IN! I’m as into bling as Mariah, and my birthstone is diamond (well, that’s what I tell my husband.) But has Bonomi gone too far with these bejeweled bathroom fixtures? They start at $780.

I was speaking with a fan of my HGTV show, Save My Bath, about a recent episode that just aired. She was surprised at the outcome of this bathroom because it was so “out there” (in her words). Well… I was a bit taken aback, as you may imagine. She said “don’t you design a space based on your own good taste?” *Good* being a relative word, of course, because what is good taste? My taste is removed from the equation when I’m designing for other people. After all, people are like snow flakes – there is not one that is like the other.

Before & After: Belisle Family Rocker Bath

This bathroom was designed for the Belisle family. Hubby used to be in a metal rock band, and wifey was also a musician. They had masks and skulls all around the house, and a poker room tricked out with a flame-motif table. They were fun, young and edgy. So their bathroom had to reflect that. Shabby Chic was not an option.

The ingredients for this Room Recipe: Chrome, lucite, glass and a vibrant color palette.
