RoomRecipes

We all have our own idea of what foods are comforting. For me, it’s my mom’s beef stew or her meatballs. Is there a way to translate that food-mood connection we get from eating comfort food to the way we design our home? The answer is a resounding YES! (…if you have an easy, simple Room Recipe – a recipe for success.) It’s really about planning. A recipe gives us a plan, and all we have to do is put it into action. A great place to start when designing a new space: empty it. It’s like a meditation such as emptying your brain at night so you can sleep peacefully. You have to wipe the slate clean so you can have a fresh outlook. Then, make a list of the things in your home that give you comfort. Here’s mine:

  • My mom’s antique perfume bottles
  • Our comfy down sofa
  • Black n’ white photos of my nieces and nephews
  • Hand carved candle holder my mother-in-law gave me
  • Hand crafted tree tapestry from Kenya that my sister gave us as a wedding gift
  • My husband’s guitar
  • Our Ceiva frame!!

Of course, there’s so much more. But putting some of these items in every room in your home will give you a warm, comfy feeling every day.

my hubby's guitar!

So, no, you can’t slather macaroni and cheese on your walls to get that same chemical reaction of comfort food. But you can surround yourself with the things you love – these are the ingredients of comfort (even if it means going basement diving to find grandma’s rocker and giving it a fresh face).
